We don't put a price on this, because materials vary by supplier and by the week — any figure here would be made up. Take these quantities to a merchant and they'll price them properly.
What it assumes
- A straight run on reasonably level ground, using standard 1.83 m (6 ft) panels.
- One post per panel plus one to finish the run.
- Two bags of postcrete per post.
- Slopes, corners, gates, and taking the old fence away all change the count — and none of them can be worked out from a box on a web page.
Common questions
- How many fence panels do I need?
- Divide the length of the run by the panel width and round up. Standard UK fence panels are 1.83 m (6 ft) wide, so a 12 m run needs 7 panels. You cannot buy part of a panel, so a run that does not divide evenly still needs the whole one.
- How many fence posts do I need?
- One more than the number of panels. Each panel sits between two posts and they share, so the run needs a post at every join plus one at each end — 7 panels need 8 posts.
- How many bags of postcrete per fence post?
- Two bags per post is the usual allowance for a 100 mm post in a 300 mm hole. Wider holes, corner posts and gate posts take more.
- Do I need gravel boards?
- They are not compulsory, but they keep the bottom of the panel off wet ground so it rots more slowly. You need one per panel. On a fence you want to last, they are usually worth it.
- Does this include the price?
- No, deliberately. Timber prices move week to week and differ between merchants, so any figure quoted here would be invented. Take the quantities to a supplier and get them priced properly.
